Red Dress Day (Indigenous)

The Red Dress Day
  • A national day of awareness and remembrance for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. Red dresses are displayed in public spaces to symbolize the lost lives and call for justice regarding disproportionate violence against Indigenous women.
  • Why Red: The colour red is believed to be the only colour spirits can see, acting as a link to bring back loved ones.
  • Purpose: Day aims to confront the ongoing crisis of violence, which is a direct result of colonization and to honour the memories of victims.
  • Solidarity: Wear red or hang red dresses in windows or trees to show support for the families and to raise awareness.
  • Advocacy and Awareness: Serves as a reminder to act on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s call to action and address the systemic causes of violence.
