CUPE 1883 maintains an email list to communicate with our members through personal emails. We cannot communicate using the employer’s e-mail system, for the following reasons:
- Employer Access: Employers legally own and can monitor work email systems, meaning there’s no expectation of privacy.
- Legal Boundaries: Labour laws protect union activity but don’t guarantee the right to use employer communication tools for it.
- Risk of Surveillance: Using work email exposes union supporters to potential monitoring or subtle employer retaliation.
- Union Independence: Personal communication tools ensure union discussions stay private and free from employer influence.
- Best Practice: Canadian unions recommend using personal emails and devices to protect workers and organizing efforts.
- Strike Organization: If we ever need to go on strike we need to a reliable method to communicate with our members.
